Two San Diego police officers were shot, one of them fatally, during a traffic stop late Thursday night in Southcrest, police said.
The officers, both part of the department's gang suppression unit, were not immediately identified.
The two were rushed to hospitals after the shooting. One of them had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died despite lifesaving efforts. The second officer was undergoing surgery early Friday.
The shooting occurred about 11 p.m. in the area of Acacia Grove Way near 36th Street. Police said one person was in custody and another was being sought. No additional information has been released.
Police swarmed the area and searched for any possible additional suspects with the aid of officers in a helicopter, focusing on the Chollas Creek open area just south of Acacia Grove.
Residents were asked to stay inside.
The incident comes as police in Southern California and throughout the country are on high alert following the killing of officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, La., earlier this month
