Two Texas officers were wounded after a shootout erupted as they responded to a suicide attempt Friday evening, police said.
Officers Ray Azucena and Xavier Serrano arrived at a residence in south Fort Worth around 8:30 p.m.
Upon entering the home, Azucena and Serrano discovered a man unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head in the back of the house, Fort Worth Sgt. Marc Povero said.
A witness at the home told the officers somebody was hiding out in a backyard shed.
Acuna and Serrano went into the backyard to make contact, but once they opened the shed door somebody began shooting from inside and struck one of the officers several times in the torso.
The officers managed to return fire, but for hours it remained unclear whether the shooter was alive or dead.
SWAT teams arrived on the scene and shot tear gas canisters toward the shed in attempt to force the suspect out.
After hours of silence, Povero finally confirmed just before midnight that the suspect had been shot and killed, although it was not immediately clear if the person was killed in the firefight or by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Both officers were rushed to an area hospital, where they were listed in stable condition. Officer Azucena was later released.
